Fido

Zabbar Miya surrendered the bear and warned us it was a poor eater. His lengthy emaciated body made it quite obvious that Fido could be a very big male bear if only he could eat. The reason for this was only clear when Drs Ilyaraja and Moorthy went to cut his ropes and found a huge golfball sized tumour in his mouth. This has formed on his broken lower canine. It keeps Fido in extreme pain and his food is being specially prepared till we can perform dental surgery and have the mass removed. His fruits are pureed and he sucks it up slowly; his milk and porridge is made extra thin so he has no problems sucking it up. It is an amazing lesson in patience and good humour that Fido can still be calm and affectionate in spite of his pain. He only reacts when he sees the box of medicines arrive and puts up a mock fight but once the vet gets down to business Fido is obedient and lies between the vets without realizing what damage a swipe of his claws could do to his keepers. He is friendly with all the bears though he is shy of direct wrestling and quite aware of the painful growth in his mouth. Liver tonics, feed additives and prophylactic treatment against tuberculosis is ongoing. We hope to nurture him and get him ready for surgery as soon as possible. Meanwhile anti biotics and anti inflammatory drugs are helping reduce the inflammation.
