| MISKY
bear came to Wildlife SOS on 19th November 2004, with a horrific wound
on her muzzle, the cut being large and jagged with a rough rope passing
through the wound, thus aggravating the pain. She was also anaemic and
weak, with a difficult parasitic infestation. She was kept in the quarantine
pen for a three-month period. In the meanwhile, she was treated for the
rope penetrated wound, worm infestation, alopecia, and she got vaccinated
against Rabies, Leptospirosis. She still carries a large scar on her muzzle,
and her nasal flap is still split. She finished the quarantine period,
radiating positive health and a glowing coat.
We translocated her to the socialization enclosure with one old bear (male)
called RAJA and nine females on 17 July 05. Raja only likes girls (girl
bears) in his enclosure and Misky fitted in well, being an amiable gentle
bear. However, she keeps her distance from Raja and prefers to play with
the others. Her best friend is 'Adelaide' and they have bonded like long
lost sisters. They play together, eat together and sleep together. They
are never happy if they do not have each other by their sides. When Misky
came to us as a young adult bear, about three years of age, she weighed
80 kg. Today she weighs 101 kg. She hates fighting and wrestling but enjoys
playing in the pond with Adelaide, or digging holes that never go anywhere,
or climbing trees and platforms on which they lie down curled up next
to each other. Her diet in the morning comprises rotis, fruits, 300 gm
honey, 100 gm cooked soybean, 2 boiled eggs. She enjoys
watermelon, mangos, and pineapples .In the evening wheat porridge (4 kg)
and a litre of milk helps her keep her energy levels high. Misky enjoys
life but she still has to regain her full coat and, maybe grow a little
more.
